What we cover

Three kinds of event make the news section:

  • Trial results. Each time Lilly announces a Phase 3 readout we post the numbers as reported, both ways of counting, and the placebo figure. Every registered retatrutide study is listed on ClinicalTrials.gov.[1] The trial tracker holds the full table.

How to read a topline result

Most trial news arrives as a company press release, weeks or months before the peer-reviewed paper. A few habits help:

  1. Find both numbers. Lilly reports each weight result on two estimands. The treatment-regimen figure counts everyone randomised; the efficacy figure counts people while they stayed on the drug, and is always larger.[2] Headlines usually quote the larger one.
  2. Find the placebo figure. People on dummy injections in these trials lost 2% to 4% of their weight. The drug's effect is the gap, not the headline.
  3. Check who was in the trial. A result in people with a BMI of 40 does not transfer to someone with a BMI of 28.
  4. Notice what is missing. Topline releases rarely give heart-rate, liver or rhythm data. Those come with the paper.
  5. Remember what the trial tested. A pharmaceutical-grade product, in monitored people, with doses set by doctors. Nothing sold online as "reta" is that product.[3]

Six people in Victoria developed acute liver injury after using unapproved products labelled retatrutide, one nearly needing a transplant; testing then found a vial at almost twice its labelled strength.

TRIUMPH-1 results: 25% average weight loss at 80 weeks

Lilly's pivotal TRIUMPH-1 trial in 2,339 adults reported average weight loss of up to 25.0% versus 3.9% on placebo, with more nausea, dysesthesia and drop-outs at higher doses.
